Lebanon is defined by two distinct topographies. There is the Mediterranean Seaboard, which stretches 220 kilometres (137 mi) from the fortified and inaccessible border with Israel in the south to the border with Syria in the north. Then there is the remainder of the country, dominated by inland mountain ranges that run most of its length and reach almost to the coast.
