Hill Tribes of Sapa, Vietnam (Photo Essay)

July 13, 2018

Vietnam’s far north, close to the southeastern border of China’s Yunnan Province, is known as the “Land of the Big Skies”. Here, tranquillity prevails over the vast cascading rice terraces and rippled mountains covered in low-hanging fog.The region is home to many indigenous hill tribes, welcoming travellers who go on single or multi-day hikes from the town of Sapa. Sapa was first inhabited by highland minorities such as the Black and Flower Hmong, the Yao, and the Tay and Giay. Today these four minority groups share the region with the Red Dzao and the Zai people. Between treks, [MORE...]

Indonesia – Emerald of the Equator

June 17, 2018

Thinking about Indonesia evokes visions of active volcanoes, deserted beaches, colourful tribes and their festivals, remote villages, ancient ruins, and wildlife in dense jungles facing the rapid destruction of their habitat. Sounds like another country qualified to be promoted under the slogan of “Many Countries in One”. While this slogan may be well founded, this “one country” is surely not surveyed in one single visit, unless you are spending months on [MORE...]

A Glimpse into the Hermit Kingdom of North Korea

December 12, 2017

It has taken me almost a month since returning from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea) to start writing this article. All this time I have been mulling over how to start this very first paragraph in which I should explain why I visited this country. I am not sure if I should write purely about my travel experiences, or tell it like it is – everything I was told by my local guides (referred to as the “minders”), my experiences, and my [MORE...]

Bali – The Island of the Gods

December 11, 2017

Bali, for the foreign traveller, has changed much over the past 20 years, but so have many popular places around the world. Journey away from the crowds to find the real Bali. Commonly referred to as the “Island of a Thousand Temples”, “Island of Gods”, and “Bali Dwipa”, Bali island is the most visited Indonesian island by foreign travellers. While most travellers start and end their Indonesia journey in Bali, often fixated on their luxurious tourist resort and spas, Indonesia is much more than Bali. Many seasoned travellers to Indonesia will argue that Bali is not Indonesia. Bali [MORE...]

December 11, 2017

This article appears in Globerovers December 2017 Somewhere in the world are still a few places where you can travel for days without seeing any fellow travellers! Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, is not far north of Australia, though it feels like a world away. Here you will find a world not yet overrun by mass tourism. A place where the sight of a traveller is rare, in particular outside the capital, Dili, and nearby Atauro Island. Timor Leste is one of the world’s newest countries, and unquestionably one of the least explored countries in the world. It is a relatively peaceful [MORE...]

North Korea Photos (Photo Essay)

November 15, 2017

This article appears in Globerovers December 2017 At the top of the attractions list is to watch a few local TV stations! All North Korean television stations are propaganda machines, promoting the Worker’s Party position and demonising all things Western. The typical programming includes news (watch out for the famous lady Ri Chu–hee), revolutionary operas, patriotic music, marching bands, army choirs, documentaries about the Worker’s Party, military parades, locally produced movies, and lately a lot of footage showing Marshall Kim Jong-un and his very happy [MORE...]

Myanmar’s Far Eastern Shan State

September 27, 2017

Myanmar has some 100 distinct ethnic groups. We travelled to the far eastern Shan State to meet with several of the friendly hill tribes. Trekking past the green rice terraces up to the remote villages is a pleasant challenge, only to be rewarded with some of the greatest hospitality on this planet. Base yourself in the peaceful town of Kyaingtong, neatly arranged around Naung Tung Lake, and from here take day trips in all directions! While Myanmar is not considered to be one of the most ethnic and culturally diverse countries in the world, it certainly offers some of the most approachable [MORE...]
